Schleswig-Holstein's Environment Minister Jan Philipp Albrecht wants to push ahead with the disposal of dangerous World War II ammunition from the sea floor.
"We have a very urgent need to start disposal," said the Green politician on Monday on the water monitoring ship "Haithabu" on the Baltic Sea near the Kolberger Heide ammunition dumping area east of Laboe.
Heidkate - "What we need now is a decision by the federal and state governments to finance a pilot plant for the disposal of contaminated sites, old ammunition."
The ammunition is dissolving and is becoming an increasing threat to the marine ecosystem, said Albrecht.
There are around 1.6 million tons of ammunition in the German North and Baltic Seas.
Disposal is a task for Germany as a whole, emphasized Albrecht.
