GAP - On Wednesday, October 20, the Garmisch-Partenkirchen police station will use an information stand to draw attention to the dangers for unprotected road users in connection with the subject of the “blind spot”.

Cyclists in particular should be made aware of the dangers in this way.

A total of 90 traffic accidents involving cyclists had to be recorded in the service area of PI Garmisch-Partenkirchen and PSt Oberammergau since the beginning of the year. 82 people were injured. Almost half of the accidents are self-inflicted falls, most of which can be traced back to driving errors. The other half usually had a collision between a motor vehicle and a bicycle. In about thirty percent of these cases, the cyclist was the culprit. After evaluating the accident statistics, it was found that the “blind spot” played a role in three accidents between motor vehicles and bicycles, with some of the cyclists behaving in a way that was illegal.

However an accident occurs, the unprotected road user, whether on foot or by bike, is considered to be particularly at risk. In order to minimize the risk as much as possible, an unprotected road user should be as familiar as possible with the existing dangers. This also includes the “blind spot” phenomenon. This risk does not only apply to heavy traffic, as is often mistakenly assumed. Rather, “blind spots” arise wherever a driver can neither see directly nor indirectly into the traffic area. The non-visible areas can be on the sides as well as in front of or behind the vehicle.

Even if a lot has been done to minimize this risk through technical equipment such as cameras and mirrors on the vehicles as well as in the traffic area itself - keyword Trixi mirror - a certain residual risk still remains.

For the traffic department at PI Garmisch-Partenkirchen, this is reason enough to offer an information booth to raise awareness about the topic.

Especially since in the Road Safety Program 2030 -Bavaria mobile Safely to your destination - the focus is particularly on cyclists.

The officers will be on site with a truck on Richard-Strauss-Platz and offer anyone interested the opportunity to gain an impression of the “blind spot” phenomenon directly from the driver's seat of the vehicle.

In line with the motto “see and be seen”, a free bike check will also be offered at the stand.

In the darker months of the year in particular, it is crucial that the bike is equipped with suitable lighting in a roadworthy manner for safe participation in road traffic.
