Colin Powell, America's first black secretary of state, has died of complications from Covid-19, his family said on Facebook.

His leadership in various Republican administrations helped shape American foreign policy in the later years of the 20th century and the early years of the 21st.

He was 84 years old.

Several politicians in the United States have reacted to the news of his death.

Former President George W. Bush said Powell was "the favorite of presidents"
