1.3 million Israelis, who make up 14% of the country's population, have been infected in Corona since the outbreak of the plague until the end of last month, with nearly 8,000 dead as a result of medical complications directly related to the deadly virus. A new study by the Taub Center conducted by Prof. Alex Weinreb shows that the highest testing rates were found in non-Haredi Jewish localities, while the

highest infection rates were found in Haredi localities, and the highest hospitalization rates were found in Druze and non-Bedouin Arab localities.

The cumulative rate of corona tests since the beginning of the epidemic last month reached 2.7 tests per person, but there are differences between sectors and even within them: the rate of tests in Bedouin localities was the lowest - 115,000 tests on average per 100,000 people, and the highest rate in the non-Jewish sector. Haredi: 324,000 tests per 100,000 people.

The rate of tests in the ultra-Orthodox sector was around the national average.

In Arab and Druze localities, the average test rates were relatively low at 210,000 and 217,000 per 100,000 people, respectively. It should be noted that

within the Druze sector the rate of tests in the Galilee localities was 60% higher than in the Golan localities.

Multiple cases of infection - especially among the ultra-Orthodox

A slightly different picture emerges regarding verified infections: the lowest cumulative percentage of infections is in the Bedouin sector (about 8.4%) and the highest - in the ultra-Orthodox sector (31%), while the national average was 13.7%. The ultra-Orthodox localities of Rechasim and Beitar Illit - led the table of those infected with a verified percentage of about 40% and about 38%, respectively. After weighting poverty data, population density, percentage of elderly residents (+65) and other characteristics, the percentage of those infected remained 2.4 times higher in ultra-Orthodox localities compared to non-ultra-Orthodox Jewish localities.

The study also found a high correlation between the levels of infection and the percentage of ultra-Orthodox in the population, even in non-ultra-Orthodox Jewish localities. In the ten localities with the highest infection rate, 45.6% of the students attend ultra-Orthodox elementary schools (belonging to an educational institution served as an indicator of the level of religiosity and the size of the ultra-Orthodox population in the locality). In fact, for every additional percentage of children who studied in the ultra-Orthodox education system in non-ultra-Orthodox localities, there were over 130 additional cases of verified corona patients per 100,000 residents.

In the Arab sector the picture is different: the five Arab localities with more than 17% infection have no common characteristic: neither in terms of location, nor in religion nor in terms of socio-economic level - as well as the two localities with the lowest levels of infection (less than 8% ). The rate of verified infections in the Bedouin localities is about 40% less than the rate of verified infections in the Arab and Druze localities, but this difference disappeared after monitoring the rate of tests.

Hospitalization rates are particularly high among Arabs - due to background illnesses

The Taub Center sought to examine the main risk factors for disease progression to hospitalization, and found that age data combined with a background of heart disease, diabetes and obesity, are the relevant risk factors.

These components explain most of the differences in the cumulative hospitalization patterns between sectors: while the highest rates of infection were in ultra-Orthodox localities, which are mostly populated by young people, a high rate of hospitalization is actually found in Arab localities.

14 of the 20 "peak hospitalizations" due to Koruna are Arab localities: Abu Ghosh is at the top of the list with 1.2% hospitalized out of the total population.

The risk of hospitalization in ultra-Orthodox society is generally low, as only a few of them are over the age of 65. Bnei Brak, which has a relatively high proportion of residents over the age of 65 (over 8%), is exceptional among the ultra-Orthodox localities: 0.9%.

The higher than expected hospitalization rates in the Bedouin sector (relative to the rate of verified infections) reflect a high incidence of background diseases, along with a lower testing rate that hides the incidence of infection more than any other population in the country.

"The general pattern of corona examinations, cases of infection and hospitalizations indicates that the ultra-Orthodox population experienced the corona epidemic differently from the rest of the population," explains researcher Prof. Alex Weinreb.

"The highest cumulative infection rate is found in ultra-Orthodox localities - 2.5 times its rate in non-ultra-Orthodox communities, followed by non-ultra-Orthodox localities, some of which have a high rate of ultra-Orthodox. "The hospitalization in this sector is relatively small. Non-Bedouin Arab localities and Druze localities have suffered the most severe damage in terms of morbidity, probably because they also have a high rate of background diseases."

Poorer - more positive for Corona and also more hospitalized

The Taub Center's study included analysis of local characteristics such as socio-economic cluster, income inequality, population size, population density, percentage of adults over 65, and the definition of "development town."

In localities from the lowest socio-economic class, the lowest levels of tests per capita and the highest levels of verified infected and hospitalized were measured.

The population density was not significantly affected.

The percentage of people over 65 had an effect on the levels of testing, infection and hospitalizations: in localities with a high percentage of people aged 65 and over, low levels of infection and hospitalization were observed - a fact that indicates the success of efforts to lower infection levels among them.

Low levels of testing and hospitalization were also found in localities with a small percentage of adults, in places with a large young population, who, even if infected, were likely to experience symptoms of mild morbidity, if at all were symptomatic.

Low test rate.

"The data show that the poorest localities had the lowest testing rate, while the richest localities and localities with people aged 65 and over had the lowest infection and hospitalization rates," explained Prof. Weinreb, adding that 2.5 from the fact that in non-Haredi Jewish localities. Even after supervision of socio-economic status and population density, the risk remains 2.4 times higher. "

Factors such as poverty, population density and the age structure of the population explain about 30% of the infection among the ultra-Orthodox.

The rest - can probably be explained by behavioral factors.

Apparently, in the Arab sector the high hospitalization rates did indeed match the prevalence of background diseases in this population.
