Russia announced today (Monday) that it will cease operations of its diplomatic mission in NATO after the Western military alliance envoys expelled eight Russians accused of spying.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that response, representatives of NATO's military mission in Moscow will lose their residency permits starting From November 1, and in addition, the United States Information Office in the Russian capital will be closed. "If NATO members have urgent matters, they can contact our ambassador to Belgium with these questions," Lavrov said at a press conference.

NATO announced on October 6, the expulsion of eight members of the Russian delegation to the Soviet claims were "Russian intelligence officers undeclared" . Moscow said at the time that their deportation undermined hopes of improving relations with the alliance. "NATO is not interested in equal dialogue and joint work," Lavrov said. "If that is the case, then we see no need to continue to pretend that changes can be made in the foreseeable future."

Russia's decision marks a further deterioration in bio-East-West relations, which are already at their greatest low since the end of the Cold War.

Russia accuses NATO of provocative activities near its borders, and has recently conducted major exercises of its own. The Alliance states that it is determined to strengthen the security of its neighbors close to Russia following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 and its support for Easterners.
