Florian Varin is accused of having raged in five departments, between December 2011 and November 2012. He is again tried from this Monday in Montauban.

Florian Varin, sentenced twice to 30 years of criminal imprisonment for six rapes and an attempted murder, is again tried from this Monday in Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne).

His previous conviction had been quashed for a procedural flaw.

A brutal modus operandi

In less than a year, between December 2011 and November 2012, the thirty-something is accused of having raged in no less than five departments in the west of France: Ille-et-Vilaine, Morbihan, Deux-Sèvres, Charente- Maritime and Haute-Garonne. For the six victims listed, the same operating mode, particularly brutal, was identified. Young women - some of whom were minors - are accosted by an individual at the exit of a discotheque, or an ice rink. He claims to be taken in their arms.

An escalation in violence follows, where the author pulls their hair, then subjecting them to "

cervical pressure and strangulation, masturbation, digital caresses, sodomy

", lists the order of indictment consulted by

Le Parisien

.

He also forces his victims to moan, records the entire assault with his smartphone, before collapsing in tears.

During his last stint in Toulouse, the violence of the alleged aggressor takes a new course, since he leaves his victim unconscious in a trash container.

Transported to the hospital, she explains having been badly beaten and then thrown against a wall.

Luckily, Florian Varin left a DNA trace at the scene of the crime.

He is finally arrested.

The investigators then transmit all the information to the analysts of SALVAC, the software which tracks down serial criminals.

A connection is established with another complaint for rape months earlier, this time in Rennes.

Strangely, the case had been dismissed.

Without this dysfunction, would the accused have been arrested sooner?

This is one of the questions on which the Montauban Assize Court will have to try to shed light this week.

"An increased risk of recurrence"

The accused has since admitted all of the rapes, while denying the intention to murder for the last. During the investigation, a psychiatric expertise had concluded to "

a great danger and an increased risk of recurrence

", reports France Bleu. Florian Varin was sentenced twice, in 2015 and then in 2018, to 30 years in prison. But this second conviction was quashed for procedural flaw.

The court of cassation had ruled in favor of Florian Varin's defense: "

We had seized the court to request new psychiatric and psychological expertises, which were refused by the president without him organizing debates

", explained in 2019 one of his lawyers, Me Alexandre Martin, who represents him with Me Emmanuelle Franck.

Questioned by our colleagues from the

explains, verbalizes things from now on.
