In March 2020, the Bundestag determined the "epidemic situation" for the first time during the corona crisis - and then repeatedly extended it. According to Health Minister Jens Spahn, this should not happen again.

Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn has spoken out in favor of phasing out the so-called "epidemic situation of national scope".

As a ministry spokesman confirmed, the CDU politician expressed himself accordingly on Monday during corona consultations with the health ministers of the countries.

The Robert Koch Institute classifies "the risk for vaccinated people as moderate", so given the current vaccination rate, the epidemic situation could expire and end as a nationwide exception on November 25, 2021, according to a report by the Ministry of Health, which was published by SPIEGEL is present. "This will end a state of emergency that has existed since March 28, 2020 and therefore for almost 19 months." The progress made in the vaccination campaign makes this step possible.

The Bundestag extended the "epidemic situation of national importance" for a further three months at the end of August.

It expires automatically if it is not renewed by Parliament.

The "epidemic situation" gives federal and state governments the authority to issue ordinances on corona measures such as mask requirements, distance and contact restrictions or the procurement of vaccines.

"A message that gives confidence"

The report goes on to say that two “basic measures” are to be retained. Compliance with the so-called AHA + L rules, i.e. wearing a medical protective mask, observance of hygiene rules for proper coughing and sneezing as well as thorough hand washing, keeping your distance and regular ventilation, is just as important as compliance with the so-called 3G rule for certain events . According to this, for example, only people who have been vaccinated, tested or recovered can take part in major events.

According to the current assessment of the situation, further measures are not necessary.

"Compared to the drastic and freedom-restricting measures of the previous waves of infections last winter, this is a message that gives confidence and encourages", says the report by the Ministry of Health.

This is an important milestone on the way to a »new normal« with the greatest possible security.
