Tel Aviv you did not know: This is what the White City once looked like Israel today

2021-10-18T05:04:53.094Z

She has lived in Givat Shmuel since then and has always lived and breathed Tel Aviv • In a new exhibition she presents her paintings that bring her first buildings to the fullest • Does the city meet the standards of other major cities in the world? • And how does the construction of the light rail come into the picture?

At first glance, the paintings of the houses look like photography.

Twenty oil paintings of the first houses of the vibrant white city that attracts tourists from all over the world.

The first Hebrew city from the days of Ahuzat Beit to the beginning of the Bauhaus.

The houses, designed by interior architect Anat Levy, are displayed in the "Tel Aviv in a Round" exhibition at the "Pop Up" pop-up house in the Tel Aviv port.

The stories of the houses, some of which have been renovated or turned into boutique hotels, were collected by Maya Engelhard, the curator of the exhibition and the artist's daughter.

The paintings in the exhibition show

Beit Katinsky

(Nahalat Binyamin 41), the home of Guta, the aunt of Moshe Sharet, and Baruch Katinsky, one of the founders of Nahalat Binyamin,

Beit Ussishkin

(Hayarkon 52), founded in 1922 by architect Alexander Levy, where Menachem Ussishkin lived, and more.

Levy (72) was born in Krakow, Poland, lives in Switzerland, lives in Givat Shmuel, but lives and breathes Tel Aviv.

"I am fascinated by the lack of uniformity and diversity of Tel Aviv. A city of young and old, local whites and blacks and Arab and Jewish tourists.

"I dragged my husband and we drove in the empty city in the days of the Corona. I was thrilled by the architectural richness of the city. I photographed the houses several times from different angles and in the right lighting, and I painted in the studio," Levy says how the idea was born.

"Tel Aviv was characterized by an eclectic architectural style, which indicates a search for a way between the European and the Oriental. The architects at the time invested thought and money in building dream homes for the wealthy of Tel Aviv: Migdal Shalom, Ahad Ha'am, Rothschild Boulevard and more."

Do you think Tel Aviv meets the standards of other major cities in the world?

Still, it is full of ugly, musty buildings that stand out in almost every city in Israel.

"I photograph the architectural shame at night. Towers grow in every metropolis. This week I was hosted at a party on the 14th floor and when I looked out from the balcony I felt like I was in New York.

Tel Aviv successfully faces other metropolitan cities in the world.

It is a developing city, being dug up in favor of the light rail.

It is well-kept and has a culture, it is true that there is no parking.

Besides, I have no complaints. "

So why do not you move to her?

"Those who are unable to afford to live in Tel Aviv dream of it. I do it in my spare time."
