In the “Historic Tavern” series, we present former Geretsried restaurants.

Today: the Fichtenschänke on Fichtenweg.

Geretsried

- Maria Hirsch was a landlady with body and soul.

Unfortunately, she and her husband Erwin had to give up the Fichtenschänke for health reasons.

They had enriched the Geretsried gastronomy for almost eight years.

It all started with a café that the couple opened in March 1963.

And not in a former bunker, but in a newly built house on Fichtenweg.

"The idea for this came from me," reveals Maria Hirsch (79) to our newspaper.

“My father had a restaurant and a farm in the Allgäu.

It was probably in my blood. ”The landlady baked cakes and pies herself. Because the response was so good, things were expanded and the café turned into a real restaurant.

“We were able to entertain 100 people,” says Maria Hirsch proudly.

She has always enjoyed cooking and baking.

So it's no wonder that the restaurateur herself was at the stove.

Maria Hirsch grew up in Königsdorf, and the kitchen was accordingly Bavarian.

There were six or seven dishes on the menu, along with various schnitzel and snacks.

Sometimes there was also chicken “like in the Vienna Woods”.

The landlord was personally at the grill.

The shashlik was also very popular among the guests.

Beer from the Spaten brewery was served.

"My husband always tapped the barrels, he had to carry them up from the cold room in the cellar," says Maria Hirsch.

"My husband was also responsible for cleaning the journal bearings, he made sure that fresh, well-kept Spaten beer was always served."

Her husband Erwin, a native of Silesia, later worked as a self-employed locksmith in steel construction.

He supported his wife after work and on weekends.

“He contributed a lot.” Just like the whole family: Maria Hirsch's mother, her sister and her sister-in-law helped with the operation.

“There was a lot of solidarity in our family.” The women of the family were also on duty as waitresses at a summer festival in Geretsried.

"It was so cold that we not only brought the guests beer, but also went to the table with the schnapps bottle and poured them," says Hirsch.

"That was gladly accepted."

The Fichtenschänke was open from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Maria Hirsch: “It used to be like that, you had to work a lot.” Every day she greeted her regular guests who stopped by for a beer or two after work. At the weekend the fathers of the family came with their wives and children. On Fridays the Schafkopf group met in the Fichtenschänke. Carting was often carried out until late at night. During the Advent season, the Geretsriederin baked “after the kitchen was closed for the Platzl family. And when some were ready, I brought out a plate full of "Guatl ', as they say in Bavaria, for the regulars' table guests."

On Saturdays, after going to the cinema, a group of adolescents liked to stop by her in the evening.

“They were such nice youngsters,” says Maria Hirsch enthusiastically to this day.

It was a matter of honor that she conjured up an onion roast for the young people: “From the beef sirloin, almost through, but nice with sauce.

With onions, brown and crispy from the deep fryer, fried potatoes and salad. ”Maria Hirsch has fond memories of her guests.

“A lot of business people from Geretsried have come to our place, but Königsdorfer also came to eat with us.

And, of course, Mayor Karl Lederer and his entourage, ”says the senior citizen with a smile.

Big celebrations also took place in the Fichtenschänke.

“We have had many weddings,” says Maria Hirsch.

Once even two carriages drove up.

For the city elevation in 1970, the restaurant hosted a chapel from South Tyrol.

Brass music could often be heard from the Fichtenweg.

"There were garden parties with the Königsdorf brass band and events with bands from Tegernsee and Gmund."

At the end of 1970 the innkeepers had to give up the restaurant for health reasons.

“I got sick,” explains the Geretsriederin.

The guest rooms were converted into apartments, and from then on Maria Hirsch supported her husband in the office.

“It was exhausting and a lot of work,” the 79-year-old looks back.

"But I liked doing it because I just like people."
