The Tai Wai roundabout has adopted a traditional three-lane design for many years. In addition to connecting two tunnel junctions, the traffic flow is extremely high, and it is easy to jam and crash. It is known as the "hell-level roundabout". It has been listed as a traffic black spot in the past. In recent months, four major traffic improvement measures have been proposed, including the conversion to a two-lane spiral roundabout to eliminate drivers in the outer circle of Changba; widening the driving road in Xincui Village, reviewing the existing bus and green minibus routes, and re-planning the road diversion. The relevant proposals will be discussed in the Traffic and Transport Committee of the Sha Tin District Council tomorrow (19th).

More than 300 roundabouts in Hong Kong, 39 in Sha Tin

There are more than 330 roundabouts in Hong Kong. According to the district, Sha Tin has the largest number of roundabouts with 39. They are mainly divided into two categories. One is the traditional roundabout, and the other is the newer spiral roundabout (referred to as the spiral). The Tai Wai roundabout belongs to the former. It has three circles, that is, it has three traffic lanes, and it also connects the Lions Tunnel, the City Tunnel and the entrance of Tsing Sha Highway. It is the heart of Tai Wai's traffic, plus there are a large number of buses and large-scale "food" When using a car, the driver’s vision is easily obstructed, and accidents can happen if he is not careful.

It has been listed as a traffic black spot in the past. In 2019, a KMB collided with a green minibus and injured many passengers. The KMB driver also suffered a neck injury and was sent to hospital.

The Transport Department submitted four improvement proposals to the Traffic and Transport Committee of the Shatin District Council a month ago, including placing the traditional three lanes into two spiral lanes and adding a dedicated left-turn lane to make the traffic at the roundabout become evenly distributed and appropriate Road markings and traffic signs are provided to drivers; the department also proposes to widen a section of the road off Xincui Village and move the original footpath to a location near the planter in the village to provide additional traffic lanes for vehicles to turn into Hongmei Road along the roundabout; To review the existing public transportation routes or plans, including the gradual recovery of bus traffic after classes resume in the new school year. The department is reviewing the existing routes of buses and minibuses entering and leaving the roundabout. It is recommended to review or cancel buses from Che Kung Temple Road to Hung Mui Valley Road Special lines, and considering whether to add a north-south link to separate the traffic flow, etc., and ask the committee members to discuss whether to support the relevant proposals in the meeting tomorrow.

The police have filmed to teach how to enter and exit the circle correctly

The Tai Wai roundabout is known as a hell-level roundabout. The police have taken a video and uploaded it on the official Facebook website to teach motorists how to use the above-mentioned roundabout, including the analogy of a clock. If the side you enter is 6 o'clock, the order of 3 exits is 9 12:00, 12:00 and 3, if you leave at 9:00, you should go the leftmost line and keep the left light on.

As for leaving at 12 o'clock, there is no need to turn on the lights because it is going straight, and you can choose to use the 1st line or the 2nd line to enter the circle.

As for the more difficult 3 o’clock direction, use the right line to cut into the right line to enter the inner circle, and the left light to cut into the 3 o’clock direction, or the left light to enter the 2nd line, and then cross 1 line when approaching the 3 o’clock direction. The car line goes out of the circle.
