The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court rejected a defamation lawsuit filed by a convicted pedophile who immigrated to Israel from the United States against an ultra-Orthodox rabbi who warned the community in Israel against it.
In the ruling, Judge Michal Hirschfeld ruled that the publication of Rabbi Yaakov Horowitz against the 41-year-old pedophile Yona (Jason) Weinberg is true and includes an opinion in good faith, and therefore the lawsuit must be rejected.
At the same time, Hirschfeld noted that she was convinced that the rabbi "felt imbued with a public mission," after "being exposed to many cases of sexual abuse of minors, who he claimed even reached out to their souls."
She added that the rabbi "saw the person who committed such injuries as the one who murdered the souls of the minors."

Weinberg worked in the United States as a teacher preparing boys for a bar mitzvah. He was convicted in 2009 of sexually abusing two 13-year-old children and sentenced to 13 months in prison. In the summer of 2014, he immigrated to Israel with his family and moved to the Har Nof neighborhood of Jerusalem. His name and photo are on the list of sex offenders in the United States, and he has been identified as having the highest level of public danger - indicating a fear that he will repeat his actions.
Therefore, Rabbi Horowitz, an American educator who works against the sexual exploitation of children in ultra-Orthodox society, asked to warn the community in Israel against the sex offender and even tweeted against him on Twitter. "Residents of Mount Nof, convicted sex offender Jonah Weinberg defined as risk level 3, treated him as a terrorist with a machete." The warning was written about two months after the attack on a synagogue in the neighborhood, in which two terrorists stabbed four worshipers to death. In response, Weinberg filed a lawsuit against Horowitz in the amount of NIS 200,000, for damages caused to him and his family.
Along with the acquittal in the main prosecution clause, the judge ordered the rabbi to pay a minimum of NIS 3,000 in compensation for two other publications, according to which Weinberg distributed non-kosher candies to the children and that he was a fugitive criminal.

The judge implicitly criticized the fact that there is no registration of sex offenders in Israel, and no surveillance of sex offenders immigrating to Israel: "I did not find the defendant malicious. "Their actions, Jewish sex offenders who immigrate to Israel according to the Law of Return, are not subject to any restrictions in Israel."
After receiving the verdict, Rabbi Horowitz said that he intends to continue to warn against pedophiles and sex offenders in the ultra-Orthodox community. "The Torah commands us 'and you are very much saved for your souls', we have a sacred duty to warn against pedophiles and sex offenders, so that they do not harm the souls of our children. I am very happy that the court recognized the right to continue this activity." He added that "the time has come to establish a legal database of sex offenders who immigrate to Israel on behalf of the Law of Return, so that the relevant authorities can monitor them."
Attorney Yitzhak Bam, who represented Rabbi Horowitz, said that "Yona Weinberg is a light-hearted and dangerous pedophile who was convicted of sexually abusing minors.
Attorney Eitan Lehman, representing Weinberg, said: "It turns out that my client is not dangerous as a murderer, to whom Horowitz compared him, and certainly not an escaped criminal.
Horowitz will be required to delete all the dozens of false publications he has made in his case. "
