The European Union has announced that it considers Poland's Constitutional Court ruling that parts of the Union law are not in line with the country's constitution as a direct challenge to the integrity of the European legal system.
Reuters quoted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as saying in a speech to the European Parliament that "the Commission is assessing the ruling of the Polish Constitutional Court and the European Union will take action against this ruling."
Von der Leyen expressed concern about the move and said that "the ruling calls into question the pillars of the European Union... It is a direct challenge to the integrity of the European legal system."
The ruling by the Polish Constitutional Court plunged the European Union into a new crisis when it raised the possibility of Poland's exit from the 27-nation bloc.
Although the Polish Foreign Ministry announced that Warsaw continues to respect EU law, Germany and France stressed in a joint statement that Warsaw has a legal and moral obligation to fully and unconditionally respect the rules of the bloc.
