The planning for the fourth German electricity motorway from Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein into the Ruhr area is gradually becoming concrete.

The network operator Amprion presented the first concepts on Tuesday in Dortmund for the course of the 7 billion euro direct current connection, which is to transport a total of four gigawatts from 2030.

Dortmund - This corresponds to the production of five large coal-fired power plants.

The so-called Corridor B was laid down in the Federal Requirements Plan Act in 2021 in order to advance the energy transition, and from 2030 is intended to transport wind power from the north to the conurbations in western Germany, thereby replacing coal-fired electricity.

It consists of an approximately 440-kilometer section from Heide in Schleswig-Holstein to Marl in North Rhine-Westphalia and a second approximately 270-kilometer section from Wilhelmshaven in Lower Saxony to Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The direct current connection should primarily be laid as an underground cable.

Now the search for the cause begins.

In the first step, Amprion presented possible corridors for the course of the lines, which should minimize conflicts about the routing and at the same time enable efficient construction.

In spring 2022, after further studies, the company will then propose a one-kilometer-wide preferred corridor to the Federal Network Agency.

The plan approval decision with the exact route should, however, only be available after public participation in 2026.

According to the plans, the line should be completed in 2030.

Together with the direct current cables, Amprion also wants to lay additional conduits in order to be able to upgrade the electricity highway to a later newspaper if necessary and to be able to significantly increase the output again.
