Because of the semiconductor shortage, German automakers cannot build millions of vehicles.

Tesla appears to be immune to this.

What are the reasons?

Munich - The German automobile manufacturers are groaning under the shortage of chips.

Due to a shortage of semiconductors, some of the companies shut down their plants.

VW sent its employees on short-time work.

Opel even announced at the end of September that due to the lack of chips at the Eisenach plant, it would no longer let cars roll off the production line until the beginning of 2022.

Mercedes delivers new cars with stripped-down equipment.

The truck manufacturer MAN also had to cut production.

German carmakers suffer from a lack of chips: Millions of cars cannot be built

The tense situation is reflected in new registrations.

According to the Association of the German Automobile Industry (VDA), the number of new cars sold fell by 23 percent in August compared to the previous year, and by as much as 26 percent in September.

In the first nine months, the drop in sales totaled around 25 percent, with only around two million new cars registered.

"The chip crisis is having an increasingly severe impact on the new car market," says Peter Fuß, automotive market expert at the consulting firm EY, explaining the significant decline.

“Currently, millions of cars cannot be built and delivered because there are no semiconductors.” Sales in 2021 could even be lower than in the Corona year 2020.

German automakers are suffering from a lack of chips: no quick fix expected

The current chip shortage is also a homemade problem from BMW, VW & Co. They canceled many semiconductor orders in the high phase of the Corona crisis in 2020, so that the chip manufacturers were forced to reorient themselves.

New contracts have been signed with pandemic profiteers such as computer manufacturers.

When the upswing finally started again, the car manufacturers were left behind when it came to chip orders.

The German automakers are not very optimistic about the end of the chip crisis.

BMW boss Oliver Zipse said at the IAA in Munich: "I think that the fundamental tension in the supply chains will continue for the next six to twelve months." That is how VW chief inspector Hans Dieter Pötsch sees it, who will continue into the first half of the year Expect effects in 2022, perhaps even further.

Tesla defies chip crisis: Group develops semiconductors itself

While German manufacturers are losing billions in sales, Tesla is shining with record numbers.

In the third quarter, the company increased deliveries compared to the previous year by 53 percent to around 241,000 vehicles.

A total of 627,000 cars were sold by the end of September, after 318,000 in the same period last year.

So Tesla and Elon Musk seem to be defying the chip crisis.

But how do the Californians manage to take the butter off the bread of traditional automakers?

How the e-car manufacturer did it is shown in a Morgan Stanley report from which the

quotes.

Accordingly, Tesla seems to design and produce chips itself to a certain extent.

Tesla defies chip crisis: electric car maker has strong bargaining power

This in-house competence leads to a further advantage: It strengthens the bargaining power vis-à-vis the chip manufacturers.

If they don't deliver, Tesla builds the semiconductors itself. In addition, the electric car manufacturer uses alternative chips and rewrote the software.

Ultimately, there is a size effect.

Tesla is smaller than the competition, but it is growing much faster.

Of course, the chip manufacturers want to keep such a strategic and renowned customer balanced.
