After the criticism of the memorial plans for the former Sachsenburg concentration camp, the city of Frankenberg wants to invite the competition winners to a discussion.

It is regrettable that this has not been possible so far for reasons of time, said a spokeswoman on Tuesday.

During the discussion in the coming days, the goals of the international competition organized by the city should be clarified once again.

Frankenberg - First, the "Free Press" reported.

Last week, the criticism was triggered by the fact that the city did not want to implement any of the designs awarded in the ideas competition.

Instead, she opted for a post that had previously been eliminated.

The city council passed a resolution to this effect in September.

The submitters of the designs awarded with prizes or recognition complained in a joint letter that this approach contradicts the guidelines for planning competitions and the promise of the contract itself.

It is criticized that they were not spoken to or negotiated with before the decision was made.

They addressed their objection not only to the city, but also to Federal Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters and Saxony's Minister of Culture Barbara Klepsch (both CDU).

They do not rule out legal action either.

According to the spokeswoman, Frankenberg is currently examining the obligations arising from the objection. There is no result. The city emphasized, however, that in addition to the ideas of the competition, the financing was a decisive criterion for the choice of a design. The project cannot be implemented without funding.

The scientific and social advisory councils would not have supported the design, which was awarded a prize in the ideas competition, because it envisages the extensive demolition of the heavily dilapidated former commanders' villa down to its foundations.

The advisory boards, the Saxon Ministry of Science and members of the committee of the Federal Minister of State for Culture wanted not only to preserve the foundations of the villa, but also the structure.

According to this, Sachsenburg is the only place in Germany with an almost completely preserved infrastructure of an early concentration camp.

As early as mid-June, several commemorative initiatives had criticized the jury's decision on the international ideas competition. They were particularly bothered by the fact that the two first-place winners planned to largely demolish the heavily dilapidated former commanders' villa. The design now favored by the city envisages that the villa will also be largely demolished. However, a steel girder construction is to be built on the foundation to illustrate the dimensions of the villa.

Sachsenburg is one of the early Nazi concentration camps.

It was not only the forerunner of later concentration camps such as Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen, but also a training center for the SS. The concentration camp was set up in a spinning mill in 1933.

Around 10,000 people had been interned by the time it was closed in 1937 - mainly political opponents of the Nazis such as social democrats, trade unionists and communists.
