Cycling is making its way on the Rochefort and Oléron viaducts

Links for pedestrians and cyclists will be created there. Expected for their safety as well as for the development of tourism, these sites of envy

This is a first in France, at least on such a scale: the Ile d'Oléron viaduct, in Charente-Maritime, will be widened on both sides and over its entire length, i.e. more than 6 km of construction sites!

Objective: to build a 2.70 m mixed link for pedestrians and cyclists, at the same time as a “road restraint” to prevent vehicles from tipping over in the water in the event of an accident.

Objective: limit the impact of this work on traffic

“It is absolutely necessary to support the development of tourism and the rise of cycling. We cannot ignore this enthusiasm, we have been asked for these improvements for years, ”says Michel Doublet, vice-president of the Department in charge of infrastructure. An envelope of nearly 22 million has just been budgeted by the community for work expected by the spring of 2023. Until then, the Department accompanied by the State will have to solve a puzzle: how to widen the deck reinforced concrete prestressed from this viaduct without limiting traffic? “We will have to find some tips, recognize his services. Ideally, successful companies will have to work outside the bridge, perhaps from scaffolding or some sort of offshore platform. "

To read also "I am very happy to live there": at 1.436 euros per liter, it is the cheapest diesel in France

In Rochefort, the Martrou viaduct will also undergo major works, starting in the fall of 2022. Again to create a real mixed connection of 2.70 m for the benefit of pedestrians and bicycles.

Almost 7 million euros will be invested in this “technically easier” project.

The structure, inaugurated in 1991, already has four tracks.

The mixed link with a breathtaking view of the transporter bridge celebrated in the film "Les demoiselles de Rochefort" will be gained on the sidewalks and by reducing the width of the lanes dedicated to vehicles.

The tightness of the viaduct will also be renewed on this occasion.

Here as on the Oléron viaduct, the work will take place "mostly at night", already warns the Department, which wishes to limit the impact on traffic as much as possible.

Mentioned for a long time, similar development works on and around the Ile de Ré bridge are not yet on the departmental council's agenda.
