The storks have long since moved south again.

Experts have now evaluated how the animals are doing.

The results for Saxony-Anhalt are not as positive as for other federal states.

Loburg - 2021 was a comparatively good stork year in Saxony-Anhalt.

"We expect a slight increase," said stork expert Michael Kaatz in Loburg.

"We had good rearing conditions in Saxony-Anhalt, there were no major storms." The changeable weather was advantageous.

Kaatz assumes there are around 600 pairs of storks for the country, which it is estimated that they would have raised around 1000 young this year.

The development in western federal states is more positive than in Saxony-Anhalt, said Kaatz.

There is significant inventory growth there.

This is due to the higher proportion of storks that move to Spain instead of covering the long distances across Eastern Europe to Africa.

"Short train routes are an advantage," explained Kaatz.

The death rates are higher on longer train routes and the resting conditions are more difficult.

CDU boss: party must involve the grassroots more closely

Saxony-Anhalt's CDU state chairman, Sven Schulze, has called for his party to develop further towards more grass-roots participation after the defeat in the federal election.

More unity and trust are needed, said Schulze on Saturday at a party conference in Leuna.

"It can't be the right way for a people's party to start at 0 a.m.

The storks with the long migration routes are more common in Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Saxony-Anhalt is a mixed country with storks on different routes.

In Saxony-Anhalt, Kaatz is now making two changes: On the one hand, the stork population is stabilizing.

Second, the storks come back earlier and earlier, sometimes as early as the end of February or the beginning of March.

The fact that there could be frost with snow again is not a problem for the animals for at least two or three weeks.

Another new feature this year was a puzzling disease that caused holes in the legs of young storks in the north of Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg.

Some of the injuries, which were just a few millimeters in size, were freshly bleeding.

The cause had long been puzzled, in the end one came across so-called bacon beetle larvae.

Kaatz said the wounds had healed for the most part, there had not necessarily been more deaths.

"Most animals should survive that well." Dpa
