Flu wave and Corona: More and more children end up with the doctor when they have symptoms - "That is overwhelming for all of us"

If children have flu-like symptoms, many parents and educators in Bavaria send them to the corona test as a precaution.

But how do pediatric practices cope with the additional work?

Munich - runny nose, cough, fever and tiredness: The symptoms of a disease with Covid-19 are very similar to those of the flu or a cold.

Especially in the current autumn and the coming winter months, many people's noses run annually - and the general practitioners' practices in Bavaria fill up with patients, as they do every year.

Corona tests: paediatricians are overrun - "That overwhelms us all"

Whether in the S-Bahn, the bus, the classroom or in kindergarten - the risk of infection is great and the pandemic is still not over.

As a precaution, it is therefore advisable to take a corona test * at the doctor's if you have symptoms.

But how do the medical practices cope with the additional work of the tests and an impending flu epidemic?

Pediatricians are particularly affected.

Because while tests have been carried out regularly for months in many companies and also in schools, this is usually not the case in kindergartens.

As the pediatrician from the professional association of paediatricians eV Peter Seidl from Waldkirchen in the district of Freyung Grafenau *

BR24

confirmed in October, mostly young patients from kindergartens or crèches come to his practice at the moment.

"That is overwhelming for all of us," says the doctor.

However, he sees the blame for the overload in the doctor's office neither with the parents nor with the educators.

These are simply unsettled by the pandemic.

Flu or Corona?

Without a test, there is great uncertainty

In order to be on the safe side and to prevent a corona outbreak in the facility as much as possible, many educators would often send the children to the doctor or directly home, even with weak symptoms. According to Dr. Seidl, however, it is usually not the children who are infected with the coronavirus *, but the adults.

However, parents do not have an alternative to the corona test and the resulting partially overcrowded pediatrician practices if the child has symptoms *.

It would be up to the parents whether or not to have their child tested for the coronavirus, but untested children with symptoms have to stay at home for at least seven days from daycare, kindergarten or similar care.

Working parents can be quite a challenge and there is no certainty whether the child has caught a cold or the coronavirus without a test.

Without a corona test, school children in Bavaria will henceforth be considered truants

With school children, parents have even less choice: As

BR24

reports, pupils whose parents do not allow their children to be tested or who do not want to undergo a test of their own accord are considered truants since the amendment to the 14th Bavarian Infection Protection Measures Ordinance.
