The Café bereig at Ziegelgasse 4 in Freising is the first food sharing café in Bavaria.

Here you creatively counteract food waste.

Freising

- carrots, potatoes, celery and onions next to a sliced loaf of black bread, colored peppercorns and parsley: these were the ingredients used to cook on Saturday. Carolin Stanzl, Fanny Wirth and other members of the “Sonstige” café switched on the mobile cooking station with gas connection and sink. The special feature: the body can be transported as a trailer by bike.

Another special feature: It was cooked with "rescued" food.

“We want to avoid waste,” said Stanzl.

That is why one is out and about several days a week in grocery stores, supermarkets and also at the weekly market in the old town of Freising.

If vegetables and fruit have a few brown spots, the expiry date has expired or are no longer suitable for trade for other reasons, they would be thrown away, the 28-year-old knew.

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.

Together with their friend Lukas Schmitzberger and other interested parties, the two of them founded the association “Zusatz eV” at the beginning of the year.

The committed young people explained that they wanted to create greater awareness of the respectful use of food.

In the shop on Ziegelgasse, people creatively counteract the waste of food and other resources.

Any food that is left is used up

Every day they cook, said Stanzl.

And that works very differently than in gastronomy.

Normally the menu is first thought up by the cooks, then the ingredients are bought.

“Our first priority is to recycle everything that is there.” More and more people are being inspired by this way of avoiding waste.

In the meantime, more than 50 members of the association are campaigning for this idea.

Stanzl and Schmitzberger revealed that the distribution points of the Freisinger Tafel were not affected by their commitment.

"Table first" is the name of the game when collecting the groceries in the morning.

“Everything that is left is recycled by us.” That is why one is at the market in the city center twice a week.

The blackboard won't hit him.

Food can be handed in or given away in the “fair divider”

In the “Fairteiler”, a normal household refrigerator in the middle of the “Rest” shop, groceries can be handed in, taken away or eaten directly on site.

This is useful when someone goes on vacation and has to empty the refrigerator for this time.

Everyone can help themselves without paying.

“We can only donate”, the members revealed with a smile.

In addition to stews and the other dishes, cakes are also offered.

"We bake a lot."

There were hot drinks on Saturday at the coffee bar managed by Lukas Schmitzberger.

The young man said that he has a good knowledge of repairing bicycles.

With the "Radl-Mixer", which he built himself, you can conjure up delicious smoothies made from yogurt, milk and fruit.

The "machine" attached to the front wheel and composed of two bicycles is driven by a dynamo.

The pedals are vigorously stepped with the feet.

In November the café moves to the old town gallery

The mobile cooking station was built by association member Max Trautner.

"Zusatz" will be running the café on Ziegelgasse until the end of October.

Then the move to a larger space in the old town gallery will be prepared, the young people are happy.

The food-sharing café is to find a permanent home there.

A crowdfunding initiative was recently started for this purpose.

The project can be supported via the “Startnext” platform.

As a thank you, for example, handmade snack boards or tickets for events are available.
