Doctors are due to examine on Tuesday the former Georgian president and opposition figure Mikheil Saakashvili, on hunger strike for 19 days to denounce his arrest after his return from exile in this Caucasian country.

A group of doctors sent by the government will examine his state of health on Tuesday afternoon and decide whether he needs to be hospitalized,

" Mikheïl Saakachvili's lawyer Dito Sadzaglichvili told AFP.

President of Georgia from 2004 to 2013, Mikheil Saakashvili, 53, returned to his homeland on October 1 after an eight-year absence. He was immediately arrested on a conviction for "

abuse of power

" which he considers political. His personal doctor, Nikoloz Kipchidze, revealed that Mikheil Saakashvili had blood problems which made the strike "

particularly dangerous

". Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze, for his part, said he wanted to ensure that the rights of the former leader "

are respected and that he is in a stable state of health

". According to Mikheil Saakashvili's lawyer, Georgian law only allows a hunger striker to be fed if he is no longer conscious.

Sentenced in 2018 to six years in prison for “

abuse of power

”, Mikheïl Saakachvili denounces unfounded prosecutions aimed at muzzling him.

Last week, tens of thousands of his supporters demonstrated in the capital Tbilisi to demand his release and more than 90,000 people have signed a petition to this effect.

A charismatic and ambivalent figure, renowned for having effectively fought corruption, Mikheïl Saakashvili left Georgia in 2013, a few months after the legislative defeat of his party, the United National Movement (MNU), now the main opposition force.
