Munich - Why is nothing going on with the expansion of the Grünwalder Stadium planned by the city?

Many people in Munich, and especially the lion fans, are wondering this.

The city council CSU is now following up on a request to OB Dieter Reiter (SPD).

Among other things, the parliamentary group wants to know when the subject can be expected to be dealt with in the city council.

The history: In July 2019, the general assembly had fundamentally approved the expansion to be suitable for the second division.

This decision was based on a positive feasibility study by the Frankfurt planning office Albert Speer und Partner.

Since September 2020 there has also been a preliminary decision by the local building commission for the upgrading of the Grünwalder Stadium.

With a clear statement: The roofing of the grandstands and the increase of the currently approved capacity from 15,000 to 18,105 spectators is permitted under planning law.

Grünwalder Stadion: Green City Council assures: "We are still standing by the renovation"

In the course of this year, the town hall's top management promised several times that the city council would be treated: first for May or June, then for an appointment before the summer break. But the administration is still working on a coherent template. Apparently, several expansion variants are to be presented, on which the amount of the future stadium rent for the clubs using TSV 1860 *, Türk Gücü and FC Bayern * II also depends. One thing is clear: the more expensive the renovation, the higher the rent. The planning office Speer had put the renovation costs for the arena in Giesing * at 30 million euros in its study. A sum that should hardly be enough, as has been pointed out for months. There is talk of up to 60 million euros - for a complete renovation.

So is the political will of the green-red town hall government missing to implement the project? Sebastian Weisenburger, Green City Councilor and Chairman of the Untergiesing-Harlaching District Committee, denies: “No, we are still working on the renovation.” According to Mayor Verena Dietl (SPD), the draft resolution “has been almost completed for some time”. Problem: “The future rent is still missing.” The clubs wanted “that they know the rent payments for their planning”. This calculation is extremely complex. The municipal department still needs clarification with the clubs. Dietl: “I would have really liked a decision in the summer. The city administration is still working flat out on a good solution. ”Sounds like the renovation of the cult site on Giesing's heights will remain a game of patience.
