Merkel emphasized the importance of the city of Greifswald as a research location.
Facilities such as the Wendelstein 7-X nuclear fusion reactor, the new Helmholtz Institute or the Friedrich Loeffler Institute on the island of Riems are "pearls of research in Germany".
Addressed to Anna Kassautzki (SPD), Merkel's successor as a member of the Bundestag with direct mandate and in the audience, Merkel said she hoped that the research work on Wendelstein 7-X would progress.
