The western German states still have to expand their all-day offers for elementary school students considerably in order to be able to fulfill the legal entitlement to a place.

In Hamburg, on the other hand, things are looking good.

Munich / Dortmund - In order to be able to fulfill the legal entitlement to a full-time place for elementary school students from the school year 2029/30, the city of Hamburg has to create between 400 and 700 new full-time positions according to a study.

That corresponds to between 800 and 1200 additional educators.

According to calculations by the German Youth Institute in Munich and the TU Dortmund, the investment costs for the new places cost 65 million euros, as the institutes announced on Tuesday.

981 new corona cases reported in Saxony over the weekend

Almost 1000 new corona infections were reported in Saxony over the weekend.

On Saturday there were 504, on Sunday 477. According to the Robert Koch Institute, there were also eight deaths on Saturday, and no further deaths were found by Sunday.

Since the pandemic began in March 2020, 298,694 people in the Free State have been proven to have been infected with the corona virus.

The researchers assume that the number of primary school children will increase by 21 percent from 66,100 at the end of 2019 to around 80,000 in 2029.

According to the information, 11,700 new places will have to be created for them - if the parents continue to accept the offer as well as before.

99 percent of parents currently use the all-day offer.

From 2026, the legal right to all-day care in primary schools will be gradually introduced across Germany - this was decided by the Bundestag and Bundesrat in September.

The federal government has promised the federal states to support the all-day expansion with up to 3.5 billion euros for the infrastructure and to contribute permanently to the running costs.

According to the study, the need for additional expansion across Germany is lower than previously assumed: three quarters of the spaces required up to that point already existed today.

This means that the personnel requirements and the expansion costs are lower overall than previously assumed.

While only a small part of the places are still missing in the eastern German states and Hamburg, the projections show that on average between 30 and 40 percent of the places still have to be created in the western German states.
