The Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels has emphatically supported the “Fair Reading” campaign.
“It's about nothing less than the future of authors, publishers and the German book market,” said the head, Karin Schmidt-Friderichs, on Tuesday at the start of the Frankfurt Book Fair.
Publishers would already be supplying e-book rentals with hundreds of thousands of titles - “and they like to do that”.
Frankfurt - But especially with the bestsellers, there needs to be a certain time window in which an e-book is first offered on the market before it is released for rental.
In the film market this is a matter of course, says Schmidt-Friderichs.

With the “Fair Reading” campaign, authors such as Juli Zeh, Daniel Kehlmann, Sibylle Berg and Judith Hermann, together with publishers, insist on their rights when it comes to e-book rental.
Publishers are currently free to negotiate the terms and conditions for lending new e-books.
The writers appealed: “If the decision-making authority of authors and publishers as to which titles are to be transferred to digital loan, when and under which conditions, this will not only create the economic basis for the authors and publishers, but also of the bookstores destroyed. ”dpa
