The People's Assembly, in its ninth session of the fourth regular session of the third legislative session, held under the chairmanship of Hamouda Sabbagh, Speaker of the Assembly, discussed the performance of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and issues related to its work.

The Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Bassam Ibrahim, gave before the council a presentation on what the ministry had accomplished from its work plan for the current year, especially the nominal results and the minimum limits for general differentiation, parallel education, granting private universities to medical colleges for the scientific branch, and the comparison of vocational high schools, among others.

Minister Ibrahim indicated that work is underway to develop the general comparison to become electronic next year, and registration will be done remotely, whether via mobile or computer. Technical education, in addition to developing curricula and university textbooks to become digital, in addition to evaluating the majors in open education, as some of them will be closed and new majors will be opened.

The Minister of Education indicated that 75% of the electronic linkage project for universities has been completed, and that work is being done to transform university cities into independent bodies, and that university hospitals provide training services for graduates of medical colleges despite the pressure experienced by hospitals designated to confront the Corona epidemic, indicating that a center for student and citizen service was opened in The ministry currently provides 8 electronic services and is working on increasing them.

In their interventions, a number of council members demanded the control and reduction of tuition fees in private universities, the abolition of the preparatory year, the creation of an agricultural college in the Al-Ghab region, the securing of two magnetic resonance devices and a linear accelerator at the University Hospital in Aleppo Governorate, and the creation of medical colleges in Daraa and As-Suwayda, and a college of veterinary medicine in Aleppo.

Some members questioned the reasons for the low success rates in some subjects in universities from the logical and reasonable limit, calling for addressing this matter and increasing the number of scholarships offered in private universities, working on making university exams and exams electronic and automated, securing housing for faculty and teaching staff, establishing new university units for students, and securing medical references for students. Minister Ibrahim indicated that fees in private universities have only been increased by 50 percent, and this fee is applied only to the new student. The Minister of Higher Education explained that there are requirements and financial reliability of the educational process that cannot be exceeded in terms of creating new colleges.
