Kempten - The planners present two variants for the redesign of Ostbahnhof and Brodkorbweg.

Citizens can propose changes.

The area around the Ostbahnhof had a shadowy existence for years.

Deutsche Bahn has long been running a small, devoid of charm station between Brodkorbweg, Ulmer Strasse and Spitalhofstrasse on the Kempten-Ulm route.

Now something is happening in Kempten-Ost.

The district is currently the beneficiary of the “Socially Integrative City” urban development program from the federal, state and local governments, and the construction of a retail park on Ulmer Strasse is also planned.

In between is the area of the Ostbahnhof and now the city of Kempten wants to upgrade the area there and, if possible, restructure the traffic.

Those in charge of the civil engineering office, the Kempten-Ost district office and the LARS Consult planning office would like to involve the local residents and therefore organized a two-day information event on the forecourt of the Ortisei parish at the end of last week.

Greener, nicer, more parking spaces

A team from the civil engineering department presented two proposals for redesigning the area on movable walls and asked the citizens present for comments and their own ideas and suggestions, which could be posted on a pin board.

Basically, those responsible are concerned with a higher quality of stay, more greenery, the creation of more parking space for residents and a significant improvement in the arrival area of the city of Kempten at this point.

The two proposals differ in one essential point: Variant 1 wants to keep the Brodkorbweg as a two-way carriageway with optimized sidewalk widths, guidance for bicycle traffic on the carriageway and longitudinal parking spaces.

Variant 2 relies on the option of Brodkorbweg as a one-way street with optimized sidewalk widths, guidance of bicycle traffic in the direction of travel on the lane, guidance of bicycle traffic against the direction of travel on cycle lanes and longitudinal parking spaces.

Better train station and quarter square

Both variants want to transform the Ostbahnhof into a new mobility hub.

This includes an attractive arrival area for rail travelers, barrier-free platform crossing for pedestrians, a covered waiting area, bicycle parking spaces, bike boxes and charging stations, Park & Ride and parking spaces for residents, a barrier-free bus stop for a new bus line and a neighborhood square with a high quality of stay.

With both proposals, new parking areas are to be created on the wasteland between the “Ostbahnhofstüble” restaurant and the track bed.

In variant 2, the construction of a multi-storey car park for residents and commuters may also be considered.

Graduate engineer Heike Kühne, who looked after the information booth with colleagues from the civil engineering department, was delighted with the curious citizens who got involved in discussions and, when asked, remarked: "Parking for residents is a big issue."

If you are interested in the planned redesign around Ostbahnhof and Brodkorbweg, you can still look at the display boards with the two variants for at least two weeks: in the arcade café at the Kempten-Ost district office, in the "Ostbahnhofstüble" restaurant or on site at one of them large site fence at the Ostbahnhof.

At late noon, the “household tour” of the Kempten city council reached the forecourt of the Ortisei community.

There, the city councilors had the plans for the redesign explained to them by the head of the civil engineering department, Markus Wiedemann, and by graduate engineer Kühne.
