Opinion | In order not to disappear from the map, Betar Jerusalem must eradicate violence | Israel Today

2021-10-19T06:58:28.216Z

Last night's events in the Betar Jerusalem stand have two solutions, if they do not come, the team may end its cultural-sporting role in the State of Israel.

It takes a lot of courage to go up against colleagues in the stands, the kind you are happy with when your team scores and sad when you snatch a goal in the ninetieth minute.

Some grew up with you, some worked with you.

But the series of violent incidents that took place last night in the stands of Betar Jerusalem must be talked about, and it must be said out loud - violent fans who beat other fans are not fans and their place is behind bars.

Last night, Kamasso Mara made his Betar Jerusalem debut, a football player from which politics is on and on.

But even before he touched the ball once in a Betar uniform, the riots in the stands began.

This week we commemorate the assassination of Rabin, a murder that came from motives of hatred, division, incitement, social distance and religious-moral superiority.

It is impossible not to compare last night's events as a cancer in the body of a group of fans to Rabin's assassination.

There was everything yesterday, hatred on religious grounds, division and incitement that turned into severe violence for which fans were hospitalized.

And do not get me wrong, not all the people sitting in the stands beat, but there were many, see the pictures, we saw the videos.

The solution to this violence depends on two factors: Betar fans who will denounce the same violent group, reject them and boycott them.

But the second and more important solution is intensive and serious work while investing resources and directing the state’s budgets to eradicate violence in sports.

Only harsh enforcement, uncompromising punishment and cooperation between all law enforcement agencies will eradicate violence.

The Betar Jerusalem team is important to the masses of fans, it has a part of respect in the culture, sports and Israeli life, it is impossible to imagine Israeli football without Betar Jerusalem and the way we are walking now, the team does fall into an abyss that could lead to the team disappearing.

It would be good if the two solutions, that of the group's fans and that of law enforcement, come quickly, here and now.
