Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) member of parliament, Omer Faruk Gergerlioglu, warned that the Justice and Development Party (AKP) will turn Turkey into a huge prison if it continues in power until next year.
During his arrival as a guest today on the Turkish Sera channel, Gergerlioglu discussed the violations against Turkish prisoners, especially politicians and opinion-holders, criticizing the Turkish regime's efforts to build more prisons and violate the constitution instead of implementing justice, according to Zaman newspaper.
Gergerlioglu revealed that the current capacity of Turkish prisons is about 250,000 prisoners, but they currently hold 300,000 prisoners, and said that the AKP government wants to raise the prison capacity to 500,000 people in 2024.
Council of Europe data indicate that Turkey is the country with the largest number of citizens in prisons in terms of population, with 357 out of every 100,000 people in prison, compared to European countries.
The American Foreign Policy magazine had earlier revealed that the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had spent nearly 13 billion Turkish liras to build 131 prisons in the past five years.
Turkish Ministry of Justice documents and reports indicate that the Erdogan government is planning about 100 additional detention centers, stressing that this massive expansion of the country's prison network is helping the Erdogan government's crackdown on its opponents and human rights abuses.
It is noteworthy that Erdogan turned Turkey into a large prison, where he carried out a campaign of arrests across the country following the coup attempt, during which he deposited tens of thousands of Turks in prisons and expelled many of their jobs in civil and military institutions, in continuation of his measures aimed at controlling all institutions in Turkey and liquidating his opponents .
