As reported by the Holzkirchen autobahn police, the 29-year-old driver from the Munich district left his car before the fire spread.
Before that, "strange noises" had come from the engine compartment, the officials quoted the driver as saying.
The cause of the fire is assumed to be a technical defect.
The Weyarn volunteer fire brigade put out the fire.
The three-lane motorway was partially closed for the work.
“Our breathing apparatus wearers put out the fire using foam,” reports the fire brigade on Facebook.
While the car was being recovered, a patrol secured the right lane with the police car under flashing lights, as well as with nits lights and glowing pylons.
However, the driver of an articulated lorry overlooked the security of the police, the report says: "He ran over a nit light and a glowing pylon and immediately started to brake hard." The articulated lorry came to a halt in front of the patrol car.
All were unharmed.
