Every day, dozens of Haitians wait on the sidewalk in front of the Refugee Assistance Commission in central Mexico City.
Some have come to apply for asylum, others did so several weeks ago and are waiting for a response, like Pierre Liberté.
“
My goal is not necessarily to go to the United States
,” explains the 29-year-old.
If I find stability in Mexico, I will stay.
Otherwise I will go elsewhere.
I left Haiti four years ago to seek a better life for my family. ”
Thousands of Haitians have arrived in Mexico since this summer, hoping to settle here or go to the United States.
The lack of action taken by the Mexican government and human rights violations at the borders worry human rights defenders.
