Will cable cars in the region around Munich relieve traffic? One study doubts that - and gives one reason that makes failure likely.

Will cable cars in the region around Munich relieve traffic?

One study doubts that - and gives one reason that makes failure likely.

Munich - A cable car in the Munich district would be uneconomical and therefore has little chance of ever being built.

That is the conclusion of a benefit-cost analysis commissioned by the Munich district.

The construction of a cable car from the Messestadt Ost underground railway to Heimstetten was specifically examined.

For the five-kilometer route, 66 million euros were estimated, and the train would be very slow at only 20 km / h.

"And then we have the issue of urban integration and the passage of properties," warned expert Bernd Kollberg.

Munich: cable cars as a transport solution?

Express bus connections apparently better

A subway extension from Messestadt Ost to Heimstetten (536.9 million euros construction costs) and a 15-kilometer tram route from Lohhof to Garching-Hochbrück (204 million euros construction costs) have similar disadvantages.

A mobility expert gives the following assessment of how people in and around Munich will be on the move in the future:

The best way to do this was to use a fast bus connection with an acceleration lane and priority at traffic hubs.

“That would be the most economical,” said Kollberg.

In the short term, this is also the best solution for District Administrator Christoph Göbel (CSU).

In and around Munich there have recently been several mind games about cable car projects, for example from Munich's Vogelweideplatz to the trade fair, with a so-called hub (see photo) as a boarding and disembarking station.

The planned traffic turnaround in Munich was recently made more difficult by a price increase in local public transport - which was originally supposed to be even more drastic.
