The United Nations Climate Panel warned today that glaciers in East Africa will melt and disappear within two decades, seriously affecting 118 million people.

Reuters quoted the authority as saying that the disappearance of glaciers in East Africa would have catastrophic repercussions such as drought, floods or a significant increase in temperatures, and climate change may also lead to a three percent drop in the continent's gross domestic product by mid-century.

According to the latest data, the year 2020 was the third warmest year in Africa on record, as the temperature rose by 0.86 degrees Celsius over the average temperature in the three decades before 2010.

The agency estimated that sub-Saharan Africa would need to spend between $30 billion and $50 billion, or 3 percent of GDP, each year to be able to avoid the worst consequences of the glaciers' disappearance.
