After four rounds of negotiations and several warning strikes, there is now a collective bargaining agreement for the around 219,000 retail workers in Berlin and Brandenburg.

Both sides reached an agreement on Tuesday in Berlin, they said.

According to this, employees will in future receive a total of 4.7 percent more money with a term of 24 months.

Berlin - Salespeople will initially receive three percent more from November this year.

Employees with a higher ranking receive a fixed amount of 80 euros.

From July 2022, all employees will then receive a further 1.7 percent.

Verdi had called on employees to go on warning strikes several times in the past few months.

However, branches were not closed as a result.

The Berlin-Brandenburg trade association expressed its disappointment with the deal on Tuesday.

"There is nothing nice to talk about," said Managing Director Nils Busch-Petersen.

It was therefore not possible to differentiate between those companies that had got through the crisis well and those that were doing very badly.

"The collective bargaining agreement is now all lumped together," criticized Busch-Petersen.

More money for those employed in building equipment

For the 1000 employees in technical building equipment in the northeast, there will be more money retrospectively from the beginning of September.

"Your wages will rise in two steps - by three percent retrospectively from September 1st of this year and by a further three percent by September 1st next year," said a statement from IG Metall Coastal District on Thursday.

Verdi, on the other hand, assessed the agreement as a success: "We stopped the attempt by employers to pay employees differently depending on the company and thus split the collective bargaining community," said negotiator Conny Weißbach.

"The internal differentiation in retail is thus off the table, and there will continue to be no competition within the industry over wages." Dpa
