A monstrous storm with the force of a hurricane will bring rain and snow to the West

2021-10-20T17:47:16.089Z

"This is probably the strongest system I've seen in October in years," says one expert. But it won't be enough to make up for the water that was lost during the summer.

A powerful storm will form later this week off the country's northwest coast, reaching the intensity of this year's strong Atlantic hurricanes, experts predict.

Although the storm can be dangerous, the rains can be a relief in parts of Oregon and Washington and end the fire season in central and northern California, with storms of up to seven inches of rain.

Up to 10 inches of snow is also expected in the highlands of the Sierra Nevada.

“This is probably the strongest system I have seen in October in years.

We usually see it more towards November or December, ”meteorologist Andy Bollenbacher of the National Weather Service in Hanford, California's Central Valley, told The Washington Post.

"It's a great start to our hydrological year

,

" he

added.

"It's definitely going to be one of those ground soaking events," agreed Emily Heller, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento, according to The Associated Press news agency.

According to AccuWeather service meteorologist Randy Adkins, energy from the former storm Namtheun will join a non-tropical system found in the northern Pacific on Wednesday.

When found within a few hundred miles off the coast of Washington and the Canadian province of British Columbia, the intensity could exceed the criteria for

bombogenesis.

This process occurs when a mid-latitude cyclone intensifies rapidly, descending at least 24 millibars in 24 hours (one millibar measures atmospheric pressure), according to the National Office for Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

This can occur when a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass, such as the air over warm ocean waters.

The formation of this rapidly strengthening weather system creates what is known as

explosive cyclogenesis.

In Sacramento, which saw its first measurable precipitation in 212 days on Monday, a moisture-rich air stream is forecast to the coast, known as the atmospheric river, producing light to moderate rainfall every day through early next week, and snow in the high areas.

A second atmospheric river, driven by cyclogenesis, is anticipated to flow from the Pacific Northwest to central California.

The third and perhaps the most intense, will arrive on Sunday.

Not enough against drought

But the rain, which comes after wildfires have burned a total of more than 3,898 square miles (10,096 square kilometers) this year, will not be enough to make up for all the water California lost during the summer after some of the longest months. dry recorded in history.

"A storm is great, but

we're going to need a couple of them

to get back into a strong, healthy storage state," Erik Ekdahl, deputy director of the California State Water Resources Control Board, said Tuesday.

The state relies on a system of giant reservoirs to store water during the state's rainy and snowy months.

These help provide safe water to some 27 million people in the most populous state in the country.

Several of the most important reservoirs are at or near historic lows heading into the rainy season.

If California returns to a dry winter like last year, state officials warned Tuesday that one of the reservoirs, Lake Mendocino, about 120 miles (about 193 kilometers) north of San Francisco, could be dry for the summer.
