Update from Tuesday, October 19, 2021, 10.30 a.m.:

Another seaquake shocked people on the Greek island of Crete and in towns on the southwestern coast of Turkey.

The magnitude 6.1 quake occurred on Tuesday morning around 8:30 a.m. local time, the center was about 130 kilometers southeast of islands such as Crete and Karpathos in the sea.

The Turkish civil protection agency Afad reported a distance of 155 kilometers from the Turkish coast.

Initially, nothing was known about the damage.

The Greek seismologist Efthymios Lekkas ruled out damage: The quake occurred at a great depth of 58.5 kilometers, so there is no risk of a tsunami, he told the Greek newspaper To Proto Thema on Tuesday morning.

However, the quake confirms the currently increased seismic activity in this region.

Only last week a seaquake of magnitude 6.3 near Crete had startled the people (see first report);

it could be felt as far as the Greek capital of Athens, some 400 kilometers away.

Three weeks ago, a person was killed in a similarly strong earthquake in Crete.

Crete - The Greek island of Crete was hit by an earthquake on Tuesday (October 12th, 2021).

According to the information provided by a local earthquake station, the quake had a magnitude of 6.4.

The epicenter was located around 400 kilometers southeast of the capital Athens and 20 kilometers east of Crete at a depth of around eight kilometers.

In the port city of Heraklion and many other places, people fled to the streets in a panic.

In addition, a village church collapsed, as disaster relief workers explained.

There were initially no reports of injuries or even deaths.

Only about two weeks ago there was an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 off Crete.

As the United States Geological Survey in Greece announced, the strong earthquake could also be felt on the islands east of Crete, i.e. Karpathos, Kassos and Rhodes.
