Murnau's shopping mile, the neat pedestrian zone, is losing one of its most important traffic generators: The family business Sport Conrad will close its long-standing branch in Obermarkt at the beginning of next year - for reasons of space, as the reason given.

Murnau

- Sport Conrad is an institution in the Oberland that supplies its customers with equipment, clothing and know-how, especially for skiing, outdoor and mountain sports.

What began as a small shoemaker's shop in Penzberg over 120 years ago is now a family business that is run in the fourth generation and with its four locations - in addition to the headquarters in Penzberg, there are branches in Murnau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Wielenbach - firmly established in the region is rooted.

You can also order from an online shop.

Best location on the Obermarkt, but not enough space

The branch in Murnau is the oldest. Since the 1960s - at first it was still a shoe store - it has been in a prime location on Obermarkt 18. But next year will be over - probably at the end of January, as managing director Christina Linder explains when asked by the daily newspaper. The clearance sale is currently in progress. The employees are accommodated in the other Sport Conrad shops.

The decision was obviously not easy: “Our hearts bleed. We like the place very much, ”says the entrepreneur. Economic considerations did not play a role, she emphasizes - rather strategic ones. Because the rented rooms are simply too small to be able to offer the full range. “We want to provide our customers with a shopping experience,” says Linder. And this claim cannot be implemented on the approximately 400 square meters of sales area. For example, you don't have skis there due to the lack of space. The other branches are, as Linder explains, many times larger: In Garmisch-Partenkirchen and in Penzberg there are around 2000 square meters available, in Wielenbach over 1000. Finding a new domicile in Murnau's “good room” is one thing the impossibility.Because there is simply no retail space in the desired size that would be free.

For the shopping location on the Staffelsee, the announced closure of the business is a major setback. After all, Sport Conrad is an address that is well known far beyond the municipality and that attracts many (potential) customers - an anchor shop, as city planners call such visitor magnets. The Echter fashion house and the Sparkasse also belong in this league. The entire pedestrian zone benefits from them.

There are correspondingly great concerns that the picturesque market in the Blue Land could become less attractive.

"That is forever a shame," comments Guntram Gattner, chairman of the Association for Economic Development.

“With Sport Conrad, a tradition is being lost,” adds the bookstore operator.

It is crucial that a retailer moves in again on the ground floor of the commercial building.

“We don't need another café.

Otherwise it will be critical, ”says Gattner.

In his opinion, a healthy mix of gastronomy and retail is essential.

And the pedestrian zone is already well on the way to becoming a pure “cappuccino mile”.

Beuting: Sports retailing is economically interesting

Mayor Rolf Beuting (ÖDP / Bürgerforum) suggests a similar tone: "We regret the closure, as the Conrad sports shop in the Obermarkt fulfills an anchor function," he says.

The town hall chief hopes that there will soon be a successor with a comparable range of products.

“We are convinced that sports retailing in Murnau is also very interesting from an economic point of view,” he adds.

Because in a holiday region like this there is a high demand for sports equipment - both among citizens and day guests.

The owner of the said property, who does not want to be named, holds back, however, when asked about the future plans: “I don't yet know what's coming in.

I have to rebuild first. "
