Dangerous spot at Neidhart Park in Weilheim: no solution in sight yet

Cyclists urgently need better protection in the access areas from Münchener Strasse to the Neidhart shopping park, everyone agrees on that. But how? Weilheim's Transport Committee sees a lot of need for clarification - and postponed the topic yesterday.

Cyclists urgently need better protection in the access areas from Münchener Strasse to the Neidhart shopping park, everyone agrees on that.

But how?

Weilheim's Transport Committee sees a lot of need for clarification - and postponed the topic yesterday.

Weilheim

- It was only in July that a 60-year-old cyclist was seriously injured because a car had disregarded its right of way when he drove on the red marking over the exit of Neidhart Park at “McDonald's”.

This accident brought to mind what we have known for a long time: How dangerous this place is for all those who cycle along Münchener Straße on the sidewalk that is open to bicycle traffic - as desired, and in both directions.

After the accident, the BfW parliamentary group called for measures to be taken to reduce “the great risk potential for cyclists” in this area.

Yesterday, Tuesday, the traffic committee of the Weilheim city council, which meets twice a year, discussed it - but without any tangible result.

The decisive factor is "that the cyclist is better recognized by the driver," said Andreas Wunder, the head of the regulatory office, introducing the topic.

And there are definitely ideas.

"In order to improve visual contacts", the ADFC bicycle club demands that the footpath / cycle path at the confluence be relocated directly to Münchener Strasse.

This is also recommended by the “Gevas” office - which has just drawn up the cycling concept for the city - in its statement.

The special situation could also be made clear to motorists by means of a stop sign pictogram on the lane.

According to Wunder, additional information in this area would rather lead to excessive demands.

However, relocating the sidewalk directly to Münchener Strasse is "technically sensible in terms of safety".

This is also supported by the operator of the Neidhart shopping park - with the request that it be regulated the same at all three entrances / exits.

Admittedly, this relocation would cause the problem that vehicles sometimes block the sidewalk strip.

"But I still prefer that to accidents," said the head of the regulatory office.

State building authority suggests traffic light

Manuel Neulinger (Greens), the city council's traffic officer, pointed out that it would be "really tight" for cyclists there because of stationary cars and the encounter traffic: Before moving, it was important to check carefully whether the current sidewalk layout was to be provided with better information - it doesn't make more sense. There is "no one hundred percent solution", said Roland Bosch (ÖDP) and pleaded for the ADFC's proposed relocation and raising of the strip. According to the city administration, the latter is "difficult" because of the winter service.

Until a better solution is found, cyclists should have to get off when crossing the Neidhart access road, demanded Rüdiger Imgart (AfD) as a speaker for roads and sidewalks.

But that would “not work in practice”, countered Mayor Markus Loth (BfW), and it does not fit in with a “bike-friendly city” either.

"Thank God we are no longer responsible for Münchener Strasse," said Andreas Lenker from the State Building Authority - and yet he had a suggestion: The walkway / bike path should remain as it is and a traffic light should be set up at the main driveway as a test.

Whether this is a real alternative remained open yesterday.

Before a decision is made, all suggestions should be carefully checked again, as it was said.
