Expectations to produce 21 thousand tons of olives in Daraa and more than 10 thousand tons in Al-Ghab

The Daraa Agriculture Directorate estimated that the farmers’ production of olives during the current season would reach 21 thousand tons of fruits, in addition to the production of 2500 tons of olive oil.

The head of the olive department in the Directorate of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform in Daraa, Eng. Hanan Khayat, indicated in a statement to SANA Economic Bulletin that the area planted with olives is estimated at 28,689 hectares, and in the pre-crisis years, more than six million trees were in the process of production, pointing out that the directorate is working with all stakeholders to find out. With the start of supplying production to the mills, a member of the Executive Office specialized in the agricultural sector in Daraa Governorate, Muhammad Hussein Al-Khatib, stated that the Executive Office took a decision according to which the price of pressing one kilo of olive fruits was set at 175 Syrian pounds, increasing to 225 pounds if the farmer chose to take the outputs of the juice.

He said that the governorate circulated to the owners of the mills to abide by the technical instructions related to olive pressing and the drainage of peat water resulting from the pressing operations, in accordance with the content of the letter of the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, under the pain of taking the necessary measures according to the instructions in force.

The number of operating olive presses in Daraa reaches 20 out of 42 that were in service in the years before the crisis.

For their part, the farmers of the Al-Ghab area in the Hama governorate began reaping the olive crop. The Director of Plant Wealth at the General Authority for the Management and Development of the Al-Ghab, Eng. Wafik Zarouf, explained in a statement to SANA Economic Bulletin that the number of fruitful olive trees in the Al-Ghab area is 462,000, distributed mainly in Salhab, Jub Ramla and Ain Al-Krum. And Shataha, indicating that the crop's condition is good, as no insect infestations were recorded in the cultivated areas, and only minor cases of wilting were recorded, which heralds abundant production with the start of the process of harvesting and squeezing the fruits.

A number of olive growers in the Al-Ghab region pointed out that despite the high price of olives and oil this season, the costs have become very expensive from the wages of workers in the harvest and the non-compliance of the mill owners with a fixed price.

The lands of the Al-Ghab region produced during the last season about ten thousand tons of olive fruits.
