In the case of Gabby Petito, who was killed on a US road trip, the find of objects rekindled the search for her fiancé Brian Laundrie.
As the US Federal Police FBI announced in a press conference, human remains may have been found in a nature reserve in the state of Florida.
Initially, the FBI announced via Twitter that "items of interest" had been discovered during searches.
Investigators would investigate the site more closely.
Laundrie's parents sent word through their attorney that they and the police in the area had returned to search for the 23-year-old that morning.
"After a quick search near a path Brian used frequently, some items were found by Brian."
The police searched the area with a large number, as shown by television images taken from helicopters.
According to media reports, a forensic doctor was also called and a body tracking dog was used.
The Petito case has kept the United States in suspense for weeks.
The 22-year-old disappeared while traveling across the United States with her fiancé.
Her body was finally discovered in mid-September in Grand Teton National Park in the state of Wyoming in the western United States.
She was strangled, according to forensic medicine.
Laundrie had initially returned alone from the trip to Florida in early September, where he lived with Petito.
When Petito's parents reported their daughter missing, the 23-year-old initially refused to testify and eventually disappeared.
He is wanted by an arrest warrant - not directly for Petito's death, but for credit card fraud after the death of his fiancée.
