Leonie case: mother accused of negligent homicide

In January 2019, little Leonie dies in Western Pomerania - after weeks of violence.

The stepfather was sentenced to life imprisonment and his sentence is final.

Now the mother has to go to the local court for negligent homicide.

Neubrandenburg - Almost three years after the violent death of six-year-old Leonie from Torgelow (Western Pomerania-Greifswald), the girl's mother has to answer in court.

As a spokeswoman for the Neubrandenburg district court said on Wednesday, the trial against the woman will begin on December 2nd.

She is accused of negligent homicide through omission.

In addition, the life imprisonment against the stepfather, which was confirmed again in a review process in February, is now legally binding, said a spokesman for the Neubrandenburg regional court of the German press agency.

A process has begun before the Hildesheim Regional Court in which a family of three is suing the Peine district for compensation for pain and suffering due to what they consider to be an illegal quarantine order.

According to a court spokesman, the father of the family was already placed under domestic quarantine in April because he was identified as the contact person for a corona infected person.

The girl was found dead on January 12, 2019 in the apartment of the family of five in Torgelow.

The now 30-year-old stepfather had abused the girl over and over again for a long time.

According to the judges, on that day the German wanted to prevent Leonie from reporting on his acts of violence and therefore delayed medical help for the life-threatening injured person by hours.

She died of cerebral haemorrhage.

"That was a murder under cover by omission," judge Henning Kolf had explained when the verdict was pronounced.

The convict did not provide any information in either trial.

He was also found guilty of mistreating two wards - Leonies and her younger brother.

Leonie had wanted to go after her mother that day, who had gone shopping alone.

The stepfather had again appealed against the second judgment, but the Federal Court of Justice rejected it.

The mother had testified as a witness in the trials.
