Memmingen / Steinheim - Every day well over 10,000 vehicles drive through the center of Steinheim on their way to or from Memmingen.

Therefore, in April 2014 it was considered to build a possible bypass for Steinheim.

Last week an information and discussion event took place in the Amendinger gymnasium for interested citizens.

The city presented the current planning status for the bypass with six different route variants.

Following this, there was the opportunity to ask detailed questions at four themed tables on planning topics such as natural space, costs and financing as well as the route variants examined so far with their effects and connections.

So far it is certain that there should not be a northern bypass for Amendingen and that all six variants lead past Steinheim to the west.

A route to the east of Steinheim in the area of the Memminger Ach and the Kempten-Ulm railway line is also off the table as "not expedient".

Greater land use

The first three planning variants are classic bypass roads between the western edge of Steinheim and the Europastraße across the fields and arable land. Variants four to six lead from Memmingen from Donaustraße through different streets of the industrial park to Europastraße. Since it already has to carry over 13,000 car journeys, these variants would be associated with an additional expansion of the European road. The six different variants differ greatly in their advantages and disadvantages in terms of costs and financing, land use and interference with nature, as well as in the relief of the Steinheim population.

While the classic bypass plans (variants 1 to 3) would bring the greatest relief for Steinheim, the land consumption for this would be greatest west of the town.

The costs for this are high, too, but the state subsidy for special construction offers a subsidy of up to 80 percent as financial aid for a bypass road.

Conversely, the variants with the inclusion of the Europastraße offer the advantages of lower space consumption, but unfortunately not so much relief for Steinheim.

There is a very different picture of the costs of these variants, but it is also clear that significantly less state funding is available for them.

Citizen participation also online

A good 90 interested people came to the information event, around two thirds of them from Steinheim.

From now on there is also the possibility for everyone else to find out about the different variants online.

All plans and their advantages and disadvantages can be viewed at the network address https://adhocracy.plus/memmingen/.

There, after the public participation, all variants can be further discussed, coordinated and evaluated until November 20th.
