Memmingen's cycling concept is making progress - cyclists tend not to

Memmingen - Civil engineering department manager Urs Keil was able to come up with good news about the Memmingen bicycle traffic concept at the most recent meeting of the transport committee. In the autumn of last year, the city council decided on the concept and its implementation. Of the 271 individual measures for a total of eight years that were listed in the concept, 65 individual measures have already been completed. This corresponds to a completion rate of 24 percent within the first year.

The measures essentially concern the renewal or reapplication of road markings at junctions, the signage of cycle paths and cycle roads and the improvement of the quality of the path surface.

Inconsiderate cyclists?

At the same time, several committee members criticized the increasing speed of cyclists in city traffic and the associated lack of consideration for other road users. Mayor Manfred Schilder stated that mutual consideration had suffered in the past few months. Manfred Guggenmos, head of the traffic department at the police station in Memmingen, also shared this observation based on the current data from the police. The rapid spread of e-bikes, which accelerate very quickly to 25 kilometers per hour from the very first step on the pedals, is also causing particular concern.

The increasing recklessness in traffic is to blame for both the spreading social attitude “I do what I want” and, in many places, ignorance of the current traffic signs.

For example, cycling in the pedestrian zone is only allowed between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m., but is completely prohibited during the day.

The well-known traffic sign "Cycling free" does not release you from being considerate towards other road users.

The accident blackspot at the Buxacher Strasse roundabout

Guggenmoos also reported on the problems with the so-called "mini roundabout" in Buxacher Strasse / corner of Laberstrasse and Frundsbergstrasse.

Since it was set up a year and a half ago, twenty accidents have been registered there, especially with cyclists.

In the previous three and a half years, however, there were only a total of seven accidents.

Despite many improvements such as additional signs, lane markings and reflectors, the situation has not yet improved.

If the development cannot be stopped, you will probably have to put a traffic light system there.

"Tempo 30" throughout the city?

Birgit Haldenmayr, Head of the Road Traffic Office, reported on the establishment of three additional "Tempo 30" zones since spring in Albert-Einstein-Strasse and Otto-Hahn-Strasse as well as in the Milky Way, Pfefferstrasse and Leimstrasse and in the Schelhornstrasse / Glockengießerstraße / Riedmillerweg / Danneckerweg.

She expects that Memmingen will also take part in a model project for the nationwide introduction of "Tempo 30" in the entire city area except for the main roads.

Many other cities have already joined this project.

Ultimately, however, the road traffic regulations still have to be changed.
