The death toll from floods and mudslides in India and Nepal rose today (Wednesday) to more than a hundred, including several families who were swept away or crushed in their homes by mudslides and rocks.

In Uttarakhand in northern India, 46 residents have been killed in recent days and another 11 defined missing after cloudbursts caused landslides and the destruction of several buildings. Authorities ordered the closure of schools and banned all religious and tourist activities in the country.

TV channels and social media footage showed residents walking on knee-high water near Lake Nainital, a tourist hotspot in the area, and the Ganges overflowed in Rishikesh. The floods almost swept away an elephant near a nature reserve, where 164 tigers and about 600 elephants live - but it managed to fight the strong currents and swim to safety.

In Uttarakhand, 178.4 mm of rain fell on average daily in the first 18 days of October, about 500% more than in the average period. .

In February, about 200 people perished in severe flooding in a remote valley in Uttarakhand.

The state has reported more than 7,750 extreme rainfall events since 2015, most of them in the past three years.

In the state of Carla in southern India the death toll rose to 39 today.

The coastal state has suffered heavy rains since Friday and thousands of residents have been relocated to safer places.

More than 200 homes were destroyed and nearly 1,400 were damaged.

Carla has seen an increase in the number of natural disasters, with in 2018 close to 500 people perishing in the most severe floods in a century.

The Meteorological Service of India predicts that as of today there will be a “significant decrease” in the amount of rainfall in the country.

However, forecasters warn of heavier rain in the coming days at the end of a brief hiatus.

In neighboring Nepal, 31 victims were reported after days of heavy rains and another 43 were missing.

Rivers overflowing flooded homes in several counties, damaging roads and bridges and destroying crops.

"It's still raining in many places, and the death toll could rise even more," said Humkela Fendi, a Disaster Management Authority official.

In Dunkota, eastern Nepal, six people, including three children, were killed when a mudslide buried a house during the night.

Experts say they are victims of climate change that has plagued South Asia in recent years and the warming of the Arabian Sea following deforestation, dams and overdevelopment.

These exacerbated the phenomenon of mudslides in the Himalayan region, where rains became predictably open and melting glaciers accelerated.
