Pope Benedict XVI: He left office voluntarily
The now 94-year-old was one of the few popes who voluntarily resigned.
His predecessors in the past 700 years all left their posts at death.
The Argentine Jorge Mario Bergoglio was then elected as his successor.
He gave up his real name when he took office and has been called Pope Francis since then.
He and his predecessor are separated by ten years in terms of age.
