Brazilian report on Corona: "Bolsonaro should be charged with murder"

The senator who led the Brazilian government's handling of the corona plague recommends prosecuting President Jair Bolsonaro for 13 criminal offenses, including murder, according to a draft report published in the Brazilian and international media. This is due to his alleged decisions to encourage the spread of the virus that led to more than 600,000 deaths.

However, it is unlikely that Bolsonaro will be prosecuted for these serious offenses, due to the need for the approval of the Attorney General of Brazil, appointed by the carrier. In addition, the draft report of inquiry formulated by Senator Renan Caleiros should receive Senate approval and there may be changes. The vote is scheduled for next week.

Bolsonaro claims that the investigation against him stems from political considerations. He told supporters yesterday that the Senate inquiry is a "joke" and that he is not worried about it.

The death toll from corona in Brazil is the second highest in the world, after the United States.

Bolsonaro has come under heavy criticism from public health experts for his opposition to imposing closures, his frequent refusal to wear a mask in public and his statements that he has not yet been vaccinated against the virus.

He claims that because he has recovered from the virus, he does not need a vaccine.

The far-right president, whose support according to polls is sluggish ahead of next year’s election, also encouraged the use of unproven drugs, such as hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug.

The nearly 1,200-page document cites Bolsonaro as "primarily responsible for government mistakes made during the Corona plague."

The report states that Bolsonaro acted against the advice of the Ministry of Health when he supported the use of unproven drugs.

Other crimes attributed to the report include genocide of the indigenous population, negligence, irregular use of public funds, violation of sanitary means, incitement to crime and forgery of private documents.
