The governing body of world rugby World Rugby, eager to increase the attractiveness of its sport around the world, had chosen Japan to organize the World Cup in 2019. It was the first time that this event took place outside of its traditional strongholds: Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
Rugby has seen a steady growth in its popularity in the United States in recent years, with the launch of a professional championship and the organization of international matches, notably between Ireland and New Zealand in 2016 in Chicago.
The United States are due to face the All Blacks on Saturday at the usual grounds of the Washington American football team.
