Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has emphasized the importance of the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline for Germany's energy security.
“In the next few years Germany will phase out nuclear energy and also from coal-fired power generation.
Then, in addition to the expansion of renewable energies, we will need gas as an additional energy source, at least for a transitional period, ”explained Schwesig on Wednesday in Schwerin.
Schwerin / Berlin - This is all the more true if the coal phase-out is to be accelerated.
Schwesig responded to a request by the Greens boss Annalena Baerbock not to give the Baltic Sea natural gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 an operating permit for the time being.
According to European energy law, the operator of Nord Stream 2 “must be different from the one who conducts the gas,” Baerbock told the newspapers of the Funke media group (Wednesday).
"As long as it is one and the same group, the operating license may not be granted."
