A meteorologist advises: if you can, you should stay at home.

Essen - The people in North Rhine-Westphalia have to be prepared for a storm from Thursday night.

From midnight, the German Weather Service (DWD) issued a severe weather warning for the entire country.

Ines von Hollen, a meteorologist at the DWD in Essen, said on Wednesday that storms must be expected in all of North Rhine-Westphalia as far as the flatlands.

“You can't give the all-clear for any region in North Rhine-Westphalia,” she said.

Where it gets thunderstorm and rains as well as in exposed locations, there is also the risk of hurricane-like gusts that could reach over 100 kilometers per hour.

The DWD also warns of such wind strengths for peaks in the Sauerland and Siegerland.

First weekend in October with thick clouds and rain

The people in Hesse have to be prepared for a lot of clouds, a little wind and rain on the first weekend in October.

For Saturday, the German Weather Service (DWD) initially expects heavy clouds and a few raindrops, but these will subside as the day progresses.

In the south of the country it gets up to 21 degrees, with a moderate wind blowing.

According to the DWD, dense clouds also move over Hesse on Sunday.

New week starts gray, partly with rain

The new week in Hessen begins mostly cloudy, with some rain in parts.

While the west remains dry on Monday, light rain can usually be expected in the east of the country, as the German Weather Service (DWD) announced in Offenbach on Sunday.

From the afternoon onwards, the rain is expected to subside, and loosening is also possible in the west.

North Rhine-Westphalia is on the edge of a storm field that stretches from the English Channel over the Frisian Islands to the Baltic Sea.

Starting in the Eifel, the storm with thunderstorms wandered quickly over North Rhine-Westphalia at night and reached East Westphalia in the early hours of the morning, explained von Hollen.

After a short weakening, from the morning onwards, similar stormy conditions can be expected as in the night, said von Hollen.

Only in the course of the afternoon did the storm slowly subside from the west.

“If you have the opportunity to work in the home office tomorrow, you should take advantage of it,” advised the meteorologist on Wednesday.

“If you have to get out, you should take care of yourself.” Trees that still had leaves could be uprooted, loose roof tiles flying around or insufficiently secured scaffolding could pose a risk, warned von Hollen.
