Opel is again being discussed in the Thuringian state parliament: It is about short-time work and the threat of breaking up the car manufacturer, which could also affect the Eisenach plant.

A statement by the FDP politician Kemmerich provided explosive material.

Erfurt - With his plea to consider a future for Eisenach even without Opel, the head of the Thuringian FDP group, Thomas Kemmerich, received some sharp criticism.

"Eisenach has a future, even without Opel," said Kemmerich on Wednesday in a current hour in the Thuringian state parliament in Erfurt.

You have to take seriously what is happening there, but the Stellantis Group will not be stopped by Thuringia, emphasized Kemmerich.

The background to the debate is the threat of dismantling the car manufacturer and the decision by the Stellantis Group to put the employees of the Opel plant in Eisenach on short-time work.

Thuringia's Minister of Economic Affairs, Wolfgang Tiefensee (SPD), called Kemmerich's statements “extremely dangerous”.

Such a message endangers the process that is taking place at Stellantis and calls it into question, emphasized Tiefensee.

The majority in the state parliament are committed to the long-term security of the Opel Eisenach plant.

"Once again we stand by the side of the employees and their families," said Tiefensee.

Kemmerich said that Thuringia must claim to be Germany's heart of innovation.

"Anyone who deals with us in Thuringia, with our employees, need not be surprised that we are looking for alternatives."

The left-wing MP Sascha Bilay shouted “Cheeky!” During Kemmerich's speech.

Bilay later said it was a scandal when Kemmerich said that Eisenach would get along well without Opel.

"You consciously stir up the fears of the people in the region," said Bilay.

His group wants to continue fighting for Opel and the location.

In Tiefensee's view, the key question is whether to close a plant that works with a classic technology and create new jobs elsewhere.

"Or do we want to do everything we can to ensure that there is room for innovation in this plant, that in the future we will work innovatively with the employees in this plant", asked Tiefensee in a speech in the state parliament.

The Opel plant in Eisenach has all the prerequisites for a future.

"We expect that everything will be done that Opel Eisenach creates an innovative transformation," said Tiefensee.

This is a message to the Stallantis Group.

About a week and a half ago, Stellantis plans to separate the two production plants in Rüsselsheim and Eisenach from the German unit Opel Automobile GmbH became known.

In addition, due to the lack of semiconductors, the Eisenach plant is to be closed for three months, while production will continue in other Stellantis plants.
