Excavations in Zerbst Castle have brought to light finds from the youth of the future Russian Tsarina Catherine the Great.

Three firebacks are outstanding, including one with the initials of Katharina's parents.

Zerbst - Archaeologists have discovered three firebacks in Zerbst Castle (Anhalt-Bitterfeld district), one of which is assigned to the home of the future Russian Tsarina Catherine the Great. "The pieces were found in the run-up to construction work from the rubble of a cellar backfill in the area of the former Corps de Logis," said project manager and archaeologist Dietlind Paddenberg on Wednesday. “The plates are about 1 meter high and 0.80 meters wide. In particular, a plate with the initials of the parents of Catherine the Great (1729-1796) stands out. "

It shows “CA” for Christian August, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst (1690-1747) and “JE” for Johanna Elisabeth von Holstein-Gottorf (1712-1760).

As a young girl from 1742, Katharina still lived with her family in Zerbst Castle under her maiden name Sophie Auguste Friederike von Anhalt-Zerbst.

It was from here that she set out to marry the Russian heir to the throne Peter (1728-1762) in 1744.

“Several parts of a relief with canopy-like elements and a filigree woman's head made of sandstone were also found.

They may have been part of the pre-war Zerbster palace exhibition, ”said Paddenberg.

The excavators also found fragments of wooden doors and door fittings made of metal, large-format bricks and stone architectural parts.

But ceramic shards, fragments of clay pipes and pieces of glass as well as a copper Nuremberg arithmetic penny and a silver threesome from 1676 came to light.

Elaborately decorated fragments of faience tiles may come from local Zerbster production, which had connections to the famous Meissen manufactory in the 18th century.

Remains of the princely kitchen - here, for example, large quantities of oyster shells - lay in the ground.

In addition, there were medieval Slavic ceramics and a Bronze Age sherd, as it was called.

In the exposed walls and window reveals, pencil graffiti could be seen in the plaster in several places, which apparently originated when the rooms were used as an air raid shelter during the Second World War.

An air raid on April 16, 1945 destroyed large parts of the palace and the city of Zerbst.
